Where are you headed?

Finding Your Way: Direction Over Destination

In much of our work with clients, we spend time helping them develop a clear vision for the future that underpins the change they're trying to make. We co-create these visions, drawing people in and creating shared understanding. But we’ve noticed over the years that sometimes the pursuit of getting it 'perfectly right' can actually get in the way of meaningful progress.

Where are you going?

Think about it this way: if you're taking a journey to somewhere you've never been before, you might have a clear 'vision' of what you're aiming for. But at some point, you actually have to start moving if you're going to get there. The vision alone won't get you there.

At the outset, it's enough to determine where you want to go - and what 'good' looks like. The rough direction is all that's needed. To get from Lewes to Alston, I just need to head north. That's enough to get started.

Refining Your Focus

As you progress on your journey, you get a better idea of where you're actually going. You're closer now, so you need more precision - not just the direction of the town, but left towards Alston rather than right towards Barnard Castle.

Your focus naturally narrows during the journey. What was once a broad direction becomes a more specific path. This evolution is natural and expected.

When Precision Matters

At some point, yes, you do need to know the precise destination. You need to clarify the exact location of where it is you need to be. But this level of detail comes later, not at the beginning.

So if you're finding it difficult to get started on a project, try this: articulate what 'good' looks like in practical terms, and understand what it is you're trying to achieve. But don't let the crafting of a perfect, comprehensive vision get in the way of setting out and taking those first important steps.

The journey begins with direction, not destination. Which principle - direction over destination, or progress over perfection - could help you in a project you're working on right now? We'd love to hear what resonates with you.
